Homeschooling is a journey full of joy, challenges, and growth—for both kids and parents. One of the best ways I’ve found to stay inspired and informed is through podcasts. After listening to many, I’ve settled on five favorites that have truly enriched our homeschool experience: Homeschool Better Together with Pam Barnhill, The Homeschool How To, The Durenda Wilson Podcast, Called to Homeschool, and Read-Aloud Revival. Each offers something unique, appealing to different needs and stages of homeschooling. Here’s why we enjoy them and who might find them most helpful.
Homeschool Better Together with Pam Barnhill
Description: Hosted by Pam Barnhill—a seasoned homeschool mom, author, and speaker—this podcast focuses on making homeschooling feel manageable and enjoyable. Once a week, Pam shares practical tips, drawing from her own experiences or conversations with other parents. Topics include building routines that fit your lifestyle and family and encouraging a love of learning. She emphasizes what works for your family over chasing perfection.
What We Love: Being a perfectionist myself, I appreciate Pam’s talent for simplifying overwhelming aspects of homeschooling. Episodes like “Consistency Over Perfection” or her talks with homeschooling parent guests who have successfully managed their challenges leave you feeling prepared, not pressured.
Best For: This is great for parents who feel swamped and want clear strategies to bring calm to their days. Whether you’re new or refining your methods, Pam’s guidance is reassuring. It’s useful for those who use eclectic or classical approaches and are in need of structure without strictness.
Ps. Pam also previously hosted 10 Minutes to a Better Homeschool, a now-discontinued podcast we’d still recommend for quick doses of encouragement when you need a boost!
Description: Cheryl, a homeschooling mom who left her long-term government job and pension to homeschool, hosts The Homeschool How To. She explores the details of homeschooling with a beginner’s curiosity, interviewing parents and experts about choosing curricula, socialization, politics and staying balanced. Her episodes are casual and filled with honest insights, reflecting her own shift from not knowing if she should even homeschool to being a confident mother and educator.
What We Love: Cheryl’s realness stands out—she’s learning alongside us, which makes her easy to relate to. She addresses practical issues with humor and is honest about her ever changing path and journey into homeschooling. Also, Cheryl’s hosts a huge variety of guests with all sorts of different homeschooling backgrounds- there truly is something for everybody in this podcast.
Best For: This suits beginners needing a starting point, parents seeking comfort in shared struggles, and parents wanting to keep up with current homeschooling topics. If you value straightforward advice and experience from real people, Cheryl’s podcast is a great option for you.
Description: Durenda Wilson is a mom of eight, Nana to 12, and author of The 4 Hour School Day, The Unhurried Homeschooler, and Raising Boys to Men. Her “unhurried” and simple approach prioritizes relationships over rigid plans, encouraging parents to trust themselves and let learning happen naturally. She covers topics beyond homeschooling including motherhood, life, and her relationship with God, sharing wisdom from her years of experience.
What We Love: With over 585 episodes and two podcasts a week, I love that I can search/browse through and almost always find an episode on something that I am looking for in the moment. She has so much experience behind her advice from raising and homeschooling 8 children over the last 20 years.
Best For: This is ideal for parents of several children and those drawn to a relaxed, unhurried style. Also, if you are looking for advice on raising boys during this challenging time Durenda may have what you are looking for.
Description: Meg Thomas, a homeschooling mom of seven, hosts Called to Homeschool, blending encouragement and practical tips for families who feel led to this path. She helps you figure out what to do if you are feeling called homeschool and if you already are, how to shape your homeschool into one that aligns with your vision. She shares her story and interviews not only other homeschoolers but even her own older children to give their perspective on the positives and negatives of their homeschooling experience.
What We Love: I love that these episodes are short for when I don’t have a long period- they are generally 12-30 minutes long and perfect for a short car ride to the store. Also, since Meg is a certified Life Coach who helps homeschooling families with everything from children to marriage. This allows her to provide a different perspective from working with so many families and some valuable topics you may not hear about in a typical homeschooling podcast.
Best For: This is perfect for homeschoolers who are looking to gain practical advice, and for homeschool moms who are looking to create a stable home for their children. If you’re managing a busy home or need motivation, Meg’s encouragement and strategy will keep you moving forward.
Description: Sarah Mackenzie, a homeschooling mom of six and author of The Read-Aloud Family, hosts Read-Aloud Revival, a podcast celebrating books and the joy of reading aloud. She chats with authors, educators, and parents about how stories strengthen family bonds through books and spark curiosity. Episodes feature book suggestions and tips for making read-alouds a habit, homeschooling advice, and more!
What We Love: Sarah’s love for books is inspiring and her focus on connection through books has enriched our homeschool days. One of my favorite parts of the podcast is the very end when she plays clips from homeschooled kids telling us what their favorite book is! Needless to say I have discovered many books that I would not have for my children without this podcast.
Best For: This is ideal for families who love literature and want to make books a key part of their homeschool, no matter the kids’ ages. Whether you already incorporate story telling into your homeschool or you want to, this podcast will help inspire your homeschool days!
Why These Podcasts Stand Out
These five podcasts have become staples for us because they meet us where we are—whether we need organization, answers, calm, faith, or joy. Each host is a parent living this life, not a detached expert. They share wins and struggles, offering wisdom without acting like they’ve mastered it all. Some of them share quick advice in a 12 minute segment while others delve into subjects over an hour or more, so there’s a great option no matter where you are in your homeschooling journey!
Which will you start with? Or do you have a favorite we haven’t mentioned? If so comment below and let’s keep sharing ideas—because in homeschooling, we thrive when we communicate and support each other.
