Homeschooling and being home with your kids is the greatest blessing most of us could ask for. But in the modern day when most households need two incomes to get by, it does come at a cost.

How to Involve the Kids: The possibilities are endless!
You’re already doing it full-time, so why not offer childcare at your home for some extra income? You could start with one child part time or care for several children, whatever your preference is. This is an easy, low startup cost option to extra income that could fit in great with many families lives. The downside? This may not be for you if your family travels often or requires a flexible schedule.
Time Commitment: 20-40 hours/week
Cost to Get Started: Under $500 – you may have everything you need, or you may need to invest a bit into babyproofing, toys, extra bedding, and some advertising.
Potential Earnings: $15,000-$40,000/year
How to Involve the Kids: Older kids can help care for younger children in daycare, meal prepping and more! They may even make great friends!
I love this one personally, as being a vacation rental owner was the only way that I was able to leave my 9-5 when we started our family. It provided us with just enough side income to get by with only one full-time parent while still allowing some flexibility in our schedule. How much you can make here really depends on a variety of factors, and before doing anything I would recommend looking into demand and prices of rentals in your area. Is it touristy? What do you have to offer, a room, an extra property or house? List it on Airbnb (Get $40 with this link when you sign up and complete your first listing!) and/or VRBO. Do you have an RV or travel trailer that you don’t use full time? List it on Outdoorsy and/or RVShare.
Getting started will take a bit of effort, but if the demand is there this can truly be a great way to make a second part- or full-time income without taking too much of your time up. This also allows your family some flexibility as you can control the calendar and block off dates when you do not want renters. The downside? When you do have renters, you are on call. And also, people are renting your stuff and may be on your property or even in your house.
Time Commitment: Flexible-ish
Cost to Get Started: $2,000-$6,000
Potential Earnings: $5,000-$50,000/year
How to Involve the Kids: Get the kids involved in helping to clean the rentals and manage the property. Share the cleaning fee with them and give them a real taste of doing business!
You can sell stock photos on websites such as IStock or Adobe Stock for a bit of passive income. Or start a more lucrative photography business out of your home! Good photographers make solid income, and one of the most lucrative and in demand photography needs out there is infant photography. You’re already a mom and would probably be able to learn infant photography relatively quickly with an online course or two.
Time Commitment: Flexible
Cost to Get Started: $200-$4000 – A good new or used camera and some props
Potential Earnings: Variable
How to Involve the Kids: Learn how to take great pics of the kids that you will treasure forever! Have the kids help you find cool things to take pictures of!
The cost of getting your instructor permit depends on the age group that you would be teaching and be as low as $300 or as high as $8,000-$12,000 for Infant Swim Resource Instruction. Swim instructors make an average of $20 an hour or $75 for Infant Swim Resource. Other benefits? It can be part time and seasonal! You will need to consider pool maintenance, business formation and liability insurance costs to get started.
Time Commitment: 2-5 hours/day, can be seasonal
Cost to Get Started: 1000-5000
Potential Earnings: 10,000-60,000
How to Involve the Kids: Have the kids help with cleaning the pool and teach them right along with your students!
While online sales are more passive, there is more competition online. Personally, I would recommend in person sales at farmers markets, craft markets, antique malls that allow you to sell crafted items, etc. These markets are usually weekly or biweekly and a great way to get the kids out of the house and get some sales experience. Want less of a commitment? Try selling only at holiday markets, which are the best sales of the year anyways!
Time Commitment: Flexible
Cost to Get Started: $200-$1000
Potential Earnings: $3,000-$15,000/year
How to Involve the Kids: The kids can help you create or sell and markets offer a great opportunity to get the family out of the house and meeting more members of your community!
